ROAD CYCLING PHOTOGRAPHY
Cycling is one of my greatest personal passions, its something I personally love and enjoy doing. With this being said, I feel like my personal love for cycling gives me inspiration and a unique perspective on what images clients and athletes are looking for.
It is always such an honour to photograph something I personally enjoy,
I have had the honour of covering some of the biggest Cycling events; sometimes alongside some of the biggest photographers, and for some pretty amazing clients to add. Its always an honour to get behind the camera and capture something special. I'm always willing to try something new and push my limits, as I believe you can never stop learning.

Tour de Limpopo
In 2019, I had the amazing opportunity to be lead photographer at the spectacular event of The Tour de Limpopo. The race drew many professional countries from around the continent, to fight it out for the illusive title over 4 gruelling stages. The event passed through some truly breath taking scenes and it was an absolute privilege to race around on the back of a motor bike and try capture the racing and beauty of the surroundings. The race was ultimately dominated by Dimension Data's Pro Continental team, who worked together to slowly pick apart the strong peloton one stage at a time. Its always so great to see South Africa host such a world class event and have such world class athletes taking part. I look forward t hopefully covering future editions of the event and get the opportunity to see more of our beautiful country while capturing some spectacular racing. 2017 UCI Para Road Cycling ChampionshipsI
In 2017 I had the amazing opportunity to lead an international photography team that got to capture the UCI Para Cycling World Championships. Unlike a regular road world champs, the paraplegic edition brings a whole new level to how amazingly talented these athletes are. The races were all categorised with various levels of disability so that the racing became more fair for everyone involved. Before the event began, the event PR crew and myself headed out to a few schools around the area to educate them on the sport and what made it different from other cycling events. It brought huge joy to my face as I saw such awe and amazement among the scholars as they were all truly inspired. The racing itself was intense, with time trials set for the first 2 days and the road racings for the last 2. Each race bought its new challenges but also opportunities for me to get some new ideas on shots to take.Being at the right place at the right time was vitally important, luckily I had my own personal motorbike rider to get me around. I was also fortunate to have a big photographer contingency in the media room, where we all shared ideas and learned from one another. After all, photography is a forever learning carer. It was an event of a life time and I loved every single minute of it, I can't wait to shoot more events like this in the future. To view my blog post on how it all went down, click here |
2017 KZN Summer Series Road Race
In 2017 I had the amazing honour of being the photographer that brought everyone the images of the first and final KZN Summer series road race for men. What an amazing event it was, held over 2 days in and around the area of Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands. The shoot bought various challenges, from extreme down poor of rain on day 1, to heavy dance mist and then extreme heat on day 2. I thrived at the challenge and it taught me some new tricks and skills that I have been able to use on shoots since then. The race attracted various international talent, as some riders were in the country for another event, this brought great competition and it was awesome to document how it all unfolded. Being the only photographer brought some extreme deadlines for getting images out to press and other media agencies, I feel like this gained me vital experience in working under pressure, something that I have gotten use to with many shoots since then, There is no point in getting images out fast if they are terrible, so I found that balance between speed and quality and its something I strive to better myself every single day. On a side note, a massive congratulations to Brendon Davids and the Road Cover team for absolutely dominating the event. |
Other Road Cycling Shoots
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to shoot various road cycling related events and shoots. It always beings such joy to my life to be able to shoot my passion. Here are just some of the other shoots I have done over the years. Cycle in the City: A few years back I had the honour of traveling down to Durban to take some images at the fun filled event, Cycle in the City. The event was a newly introduced concept, of short criterium style races been hosted on the streets of the coastal city. Lots of fun was had by all; including myself, making the day one to remember and hopefully an event that will return in the future. Time Freight e Team Shoot: A few years ago I had the honour of shooting some profile stock images for the professional Time Freight e Team. Things added up awesomely as it was autumn time and their kit was yellow, so we headed into the midlands to find some amazing colours to compliment their kit. We tried some new shots and some standard ones. The fun and laughs made the time fly by during the shoot, and it just made it so much easier to work with a great bunch of athletes who knew exactly what they wanted but were also very easy to work with. |
