MOUNTAIN BIKING PHOTOGRAPHY
Cycling is one of my greatest personal passions, its something I personally love and enjoy doing. With this being said, I feel like my personal love for cycling gives me inspiration and a unique perspective on what images clients and athletes are looking for.
It is always such an honour to photograph something I personally enjoy,
I have had the honour of covering some of the biggest Cycling events; sometimes alongside some of the biggest photographers, and for some pretty amazing clients to add. Its always an honour to get behind the camera and capture something special. I'm always willing to try something new and push my limits, as I believe you can never stop learning.

2018 ABSA Cape Epic
In 2018, I had the amazing honour and privilege to be part of the photography team that captured the Cape Epic. What an EPIC experience is all I can say. I had the privilege of working alongside and learning from some of the best photographers in the industry. It was a crazy 8 days, with very little sleep and very tight deadlines, from the 5am bag pipe alarm clock, to the prize giving after the riders dinner. But as a photographer I thrived on the challenge and the pressure, it made me want to better myself every day. I had the pleasure of interacting with fellow photographers, learning their tricks and teaching a few of them mine and at the end of the day it made me a better photographer all round. It was an amazing event to be part of! I can't wait to be back as soon as the opportunity allows me too. Congratulations to Jaroslav Kulhavy and Howard Grotts, as well as Annika Langvad and Kate Courtney for claiming their overall titles respectively. To view my blog post from the event, click here |
2018 Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB World Cup - Stellenbosch
In 2018, I had the amazing opportunity to be part of a little bit of history as the UCI brought the World Cup series back to the shores of South Africa.Unlike previous editions; held at Cascades MTB Park, the event was staged in the Cape wine lands. The world class facility of The University of Stellenbosch played host to some of the most intense and exciting racing I have had the privilege of shooting over the years. With a amazing team behind us, I was part of the duo that brought the World Cup official images to the world. With a world class track to run around, I had my own personal race trying to get to the right spots at the right time in order to get the shot we needed. It was an amazing day out and one to be remembered! I look forward to hopefully the UCI bringing the event back to our amazing country, where I may have the possibility to be part of it again. Congratulations to Sam Gaze and Annika Langvad for taking the Elite wins respectively. |
Cycling South Africa Championships and Cup Series
Over the past years, I have had the honour and privilege of been one of Cycling South Africa's photographers when it comes to covering their events. Fortunately for me, I have the world class venue of Cascades MTB Park on my door step that regularly hosts the SA Cup series and championship events. Cascades is known globally for its challenging and technical courses and that makes photographing there that much more exciting and special. It is always an honour to be the photographer your federation uses to cover a national event that comes around only once a year. The Cycling SA cup series always brings tight close racing, as competition in the country is growing and there is always a fight to be the best. I have had the honour to travel a few times to various other venues in other provinces to cover the series, which is always exciting as you get to experience new challenges and try out some new angels. KZN Mountain Biking Series
In KZN we are blessed with some great cycling talent as well as some great courses that are put together to host various cup series events throughout the year. This allows me to go out and explore my limits and try new things. Its always great to go out and shoot some familiar faces that always make the event more enjoyable and rewarding to shoot. A lot of the KZN talent has progressed to some of South Africa's top talent and it is an honour to photograph the athletes progression through the years. I mainly use the KZN MTB events to get my eye in and to try new things and it tends to show and pay off when it comes to the bigger events throughout the year. |
Other Cycling Related Photoshoots
Over the years, I have covered and shot various other events and athletes. It is always an honour when a client wants to use my services. So I thought I would share just a few of the shoots. Mudman / Dust Buster Series: Over the last few years, I have had the honour of covering a few Aquelle Mudmen series; now know as the Aquelle Dust Buster Series. A multipart event, with a main focus on the younger generation as well as getting active. An amazing event for the whole family and its always such an honour to cover it for my clients. For my blog posts on the events, click here USN Shoot: A few years ago, I had the privilege of shooting the pre launch images for a newly announced USN pro racing team based in KZN. It was great to head out onto the Karkloof trails and grab the shots the clients had in mind. Dargle Trails Festival: An event for the entire family! Over the years I had the privilege to head into the Dargle Vally to photograph the famous Dargle trails festive. The festival had an event for every member of the family. I enjoyed the challenge of getting myself around the hills of the Dargle Vally and getting some shots that capture the amazing beauty of the Dargle Vally. For my blog post on the events, click here Kevin's Bike Shoot: Kevin Benkenstein is know nation wide for his ultimate thrill in long endurance bike events. Cycling such crazy distances; sometimes over consecutive days non stop, comes a unique and special bike. I had the honour of grabbing some unique angles of the amazing machine that has gone many miles. Beani Thies: Multiple national XCO, DHI and Enduro Champion; Beani Thies, asked me to have the amazing opportunity of covering some new profile shots of her on a selection of her bikes. This wasn't the first time her and I have worked together on a shoot and its great to see how she has grown and evolved as time has progressed. Its always an honour to shoot some form of Champion, it adds a bit of extra pressure as you know you need to make the images look champion worthy. Always a great day out. For my blog post from the shoot, click here Reinhard Zelhuber: A few years back, I was approached to grab a few profile shots of top South African talent, Reinhard Zelhuber. I jumped at the opportunity as he wanted to shoot at cascades; which always produces some amazing angles to play with. It was a great day out challenging myself to push my boundaries and try some new things in the limited time we had allocated ourselves. |
