PADDLING PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographing canoeists is always a challenge, from getting into the right spot as the paddler passes through in the blink of an eye, getting on the right side of the river bank or even trying to navigate the actual river, it's always a challenge.
I have been fortunate enough to cover one of South Africa's biggest canoe races on various occasions and its always such an honour every single time.
Photographing canoe races is not something I would generally shoot, but every time I do get the opportunity, I try to do new and exciting things, to make my images stand out, and be different as that is what a strive for.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon
Over the years, I have had the privilege of covering the Dusi Canoe Marathon; an open water river race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. I have managed to be part of the accredited media both for the event, the press and for fun over various editions of the event. I have loved the challenge it gives me, chasing athlete down the river, trying to get ahead of them to get that perfect unique shot. I have had the honour of capturing some of the saw emotion that the paddlers experience when they cross the finish line, it always brings a smile to my face and a slight tear to my eye. I have had some various entertaining and scary moments on the river, from dropping my camera while running down a rock face, so having to swim at the finish line with my camera in hand in order to get the perfect shot. Its been great to shoot such an amazing event and I hope to shoot many more in the future. |
